In the whirlwind of work responsibilities, leaders often overlook the profound benefits of play, dismissing it as something to be enjoyed just in childhood. However, integrating play into your adult routine provides a vital mental recharge, reducing stress and enhancing overall well-being. And what time of year to consider integrating play into your schedule than Summer?

Rediscovering play as adults, particularly for those in influential roles, is transformative, fostering creativity, sharpening problem-solving skills, and fueling innovation—essential qualities for effective leadership.

Whether exploring new hobbies, participating in sports, or delving into artistic pursuits, these activities not only refresh the mind but also ignite curiosity and rejuvenate passion for both work and life.

I’ve kicked the Summer off by devouring a few historical fiction novels that have transported me back in time, captured my imagination and taken me on adventures that allowed me to escape reality for a while.

Integrating play into a hectic schedule starts with small steps. Consider ways to:

  • Schedule meaningful breaks throughout the day by blocking time on your calendar to step away from your workspace, disconnect from your screens and enjoy a different environment for a while.
  • Prioritize activities that bring joy and allocate these experiences as “non-negotiables” on the calendar. And be sure to be fully present and focused, savoring these experiences while having them.
  • Explore new interests, beginning with activities that require minimal time or resources. Be willing to experiment and explore all opportunities – you never know what seemingly odd activity may bring you to the most joy!

By embracing play, executives not only improve their leadership skills but also foster a healthier work-life balance. It sets a precedent for a more fulfilling life and inspires creativity and resilience in themselves and their teams.

So, play isn’t just nostalgia; it’s a strategic investment in personal happiness and professional success.
